First Question to Dear Apu


Dear Apu, how can I deal with the stress of not expressing myself the way I want, because if I do, I may be criticized by a higher power?

"Learning how to express yourself and strengthening your communication skills will prevent you from feeling stressed.  The key here is not to avoid communication due to the fear of being judged, but rather considering how to strengthen your communication skills so you can communicate clearly and effectively.  Everyone has the right to express their well considered feelings.  There are a few steps that you can take to strengthen your communication skills.  First, when you approach a discussion do not assume that your opinion is the right one – this allows you to be an open and active listener during the discussion.  The moment we give space for the other person to present their view, we are engaging in a healthy discussion.  If you approach this discussion while thinking you are right and they are wrong, you will never give them a chance to present their opinion or side.  The second step is to do your research. Before having a discussion with a person, research as much as you can the topic that you need to discuss.  Speak with other students and faculty to get different perspectives.  And finally, be respectful.  Communication is an art.  You must balance speaking with listening.  Nothing shows respect like an engaged active listener."
