Mid-November has witnessed a number of special events, including special visits from Dr. Yin Cao and Karin Fischer.
On November 13th, Dr. Yin Cao launched his book “From Policemen to Revolutionaries: A Sikh Diaspora in Global Shanghai, 1885-1945” at AUW. Dr. Yin Cao is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Tsinghua University, located in Beijing, China. Professor Cao received his Ph.D. from the National University of Singapore (NUS), his research interests cover modern India, global history, and India-China relations in the twentieth century. During his visit at AUW, the students and staff got the chance to learn about the less known story of Sikh emigrants, who were living in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in Shanghai, China. At the end of his talk, Dr. Cao emphasized the importance of diaspora communities in shaping our contemporary history even though often they are neglected due to political reasons. As an audience, I found it an interesting study because of the dearth of research on this subject, and Dr. Cao’s engagement with the audience with his humor made this a great book opening. The talk received a good number of questions and engagement from the audience.

N1-1
Karin Fischer

Following that week, on November 15, the Office of Student Activities (OSA) at AUW organized a special Tale talk by Karin Fischer, a Senior Reporter at the Chronicle of Higher Education, who focuses on international education abroad, globalization of the college experience, and international student recruitment through her journalistic framework. In her talk “My Journey as a Woman Journalist,” Fischer brought her personal story to draw similarities and find a connection between her and the AUW students who are interested in a career in journalism. In our contemporary world, where social media and a large amount of fake news dominate our vision of the world, journalists have an even harder job delivering accurate news to the world. The talk ended with an interactive question and answer session. As a young online campus newspaper, it was a great pleasure for The Echo to learn about her journey from a budding writer to a renowned journalist.
